What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that harnesses the body's natural healing abilities. The procedure involves using a handheld device with tiny needles to create micro-channels in the skin, which stimulates collagen and elastin production. Collagen is a protein that gives skin its structure, while elastin is a protein that gives skin its elasticity. By stimulating the production of these proteins, microneedling can effectively address wrinkles, scars, and uneven skin tones.

Acne scarring is one of the most common reasons patients ask about this treatment. Our acne and acne scarring page explains how microneedling fits alongside peels and facials in a longer plan.

Why We Use SkinPen for Microneedling

Elite Beauty Medical Spa in Westchester NY uses SkinPen for microneedling treatments. SkinPen was the first microneedling device to receive FDA clearance, and that clearance covers the appearance of neck wrinkles and facial acne scars. Results vary from person to person.

Some unique facts about SkinPen include:

  • SkinPen is versatile and can be used to treat various cosmetic concerns, including acne scars, trauma scars, surgical scars, dark spots, severe hyperpigmentation, rough skin, dry skin, uneven skin tone, dull skin, enlarged pores, fine lines, and moderate-to-severe wrinkles.
  • SkinPen is safe and effective for all skin types and can be used on areas like the face, abdomen, hands, and legs.
  • Most patients return to normal activities within about 24 hours. Redness and mild swelling are common for a few days afterward.
  • SkinPen is a natural process that does not require any added chemicals to be effective.
  • SkinPen treatments usually require three to eight sessions to achieve revitalization goals.

Microneedling with PRP: Benefits and Procedure

Microneedling with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a cosmetic treatment that combines microneedling with the infusion of concentrated platelets harvested from the patient's blood to rejuvenate the skin. PRP is used because it contains a variety of growth factors and other beneficial proteins that help skin tissue repair itself.

The procedure involves a blood draw, so a small amount of blood (about 2 to 4 tablespoons) is drawn from the patient's arm. The blood is then run through a centrifuge to separate the PRP from the rest of the blood. After a small blood draw, a topical anesthetic is applied to the face. Then, the provider passes over it with a microneedling pen or derma-roller. The PRP solution is then applied to the skin to encourage new collagen production and cell reproduction.

PRP For Hair Restoration

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for hair restoration is a therapeutic option for individuals experiencing hair loss. This innovative treatment utilizes the patient's own blood, where plasma rich in platelets and growth factors is extracted and injected into the scalp. These growth factors stimulate hair follicles, promoting regrowth and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft. The procedure is minimally invasive, with a quick recovery time, making it an attractive choice for those seeking alternatives to surgical hair transplants.

Microneedling with PRF: Advanced Skin and Hair Rejuvenation

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) uses your own blood to add growth factors to a microneedling session, which is why many patients choose to add it. Unlike PRP, PRF is processed at a lower centrifuge speed, preserving more growth factors, white blood cells, and stem cells. Applied after microneedling, PRF promotes collagen production, improves skin texture, and delivers long-lasting results through its slow release of growth factors.

In addition to skin rejuvenation, PRF can be used for hair restoration, stimulating hair follicles and encouraging natural regrowth. Whether applied to the face or scalp, microneedling with PRF provides a powerful, minimally invasive solution for enhancing skin health and hair density.

Ideal Candidates for Microneedling

While Microneedling is suitable for most ages and genders, its true potential is realized for individuals with:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Large pores
  • Scars, especially from acne
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Dull, lifeless skin

Microneedling is not right for everyone. We will not treat over active acne, cold sores, or any active skin infection, or over open wounds, eczema, or psoriasis in the treatment area. We also avoid microneedling if you are pregnant or nursing, have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) in the past six months, have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners, are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, or have had recent radiation to the area. If you have a history of cold sores, tell us so we can pre-treat. Your provider will review your full history at your consultation.

Before & Afters

Post-Microneedling, you'll notice an immediate freshness in your skin. As the days progress, the real magic unfolds as collagen production kicks in. Many patients notice smoother texture and more even tone around day 30, with continued improvement over the following month. Results vary.

Microneedling: Risks and Side Effects

While microneedling is generally considered safe, there are some risks and side effects to be aware of. The most common side effects include temporary erythema (redness), edema (swelling), pain, and xerosis (dryness). These side effects are usually mild and resolve on their own within a few days to weeks. Other less common risks include skin damage, bleeding, bruising, infection, peeling, stinging, itching, and hyperpigmentation.

When microneedling is combined with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), the risks and side effects may increase. PRP is a concentrated solution of platelets harvested from the patient's blood, which is applied to the skin after microneedling to enhance the healing process. While PRP is generally considered safe because it uses the patient's own blood, there is still a risk of infection, allergic reactions, and other complications.
